I've been putting off writing this post for awhile.
Maybe you've been wondering "Where is John Galt?"
No easy way to say it. John Galt passed away on October 7, 2016 after about 2 weeks in the hospital. You may have read some of his posts dealing with strokes and medical issues he'd suffered in his 3 and a half years of being in Latin America. So it may not come as a surprise that his health wasn't great. He had a massive stroke on September 18th and never recovered.
Who was John Galt?
That's him... Doing what he loved. He's probably still doing it. Just in a different place.
He loved Guatemala. One of the last things he made a point of saying to me was that he had found his paradise. He told the story of being asked years ago to picture his perfect place. He talked about being in Hawaii in the hills, surrounded by eucalyptus trees and birds. In this place, he couldn't see the ocean. The weather was mild and predictable.
For those that don't know, Antigua Guatemala sits at about a mile above sea level. Nearby his house are Volcanos. Some active, some dormant. There are eucalyptus trees and song birds that have flown south for the winter. What he finally realized was that he had actually found the place. It just wasn't in Hawaii. And really, in his mind, it was much better.
He came to visit and attend one of Johnny Mueller's Expat Insider Seminars on his way to Ecuador. He never left.
Who is Jen Galt?
That's me. The little one. Some years ago. I think you can tell by the age of the picture how long ago it was.
I moved to Guatemala about 2 years ago when I lost my corporate job. It was just a trial run. It was only supposed to last about a year. I fell in love with this place just as he had.
I'm not really a New Expat either but I'll continue to write for this blog about my experiences. Don't worry, I'm a chip off the ole' block. Sarcasm runs deep in my family. I hope to continue providing information and my perspective on what it's like to be an Expat for any of you looking to become a New Expat yourself.
All of Johnny Mueller's content you love will continue to appear on this page but in a somewhat different format. It has taken me months to work up the courage to continue on in the New Expat vein but I hope you'll continue to follow along.
