Who Is The New Expat?

This blog has been rolling around in my head for a while. I find sometimes it can hard to get it from there to my fingers to the blog. But here goes…

Many of you knew John Galt.

He started this blog and was good at working on it every day. Good at writing blogs, good at thinking about topics, good at scheduling them. I’m sure if you asked him, he would say that he was sad I couldn’t do the same. He worked hard at his relationship with all of his readers.

It’s been 2 years since he’s passed and with all my intentions of keeping it going in the way he would have I have failed. But today is a new day. Or so they say.

Anyway, in case you don't know me...

I’m Jen. I’ve now been in Antigua, Guatemala for almost as long as Dad had been when he passed – 3 1/2 years. I work closely with Johnny. I run the Concierge Service he talks about on his show. I am the head Expat Herder during his Expat “Insider” Seminars. I run the John Galt tours to the lake that Dad started to coincide with the Seminar.

The next Seminar is coming up, btw. Check out the link as this one is going to be a little exciting. Here’s a little hint of what you’ll see if you join us in January.

Yup, that’s a beach!!

I also do WordPress & web store development and digital marketing and I’m working on starting a business that will actually use the Culinary degree I worked hard for over a decade ago.

This is what happens to a lot of Expats. You might end up being a Jack (or Jill) of many trades trying to fill your time and maybe your wallet.

What does the Future look like?

I’ll be writing more blogs. More blogs about what it’s like to be an Expat In Paradise. I’ll also be linking to other Expat blogs or pages I think you should take a look at if you’re thinking about making the move.  More content is definitely coming your way!

So, keep coming back!

Feel free to leave a comment below. Or you can email me at thenewexpat@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you and I hope you enjoy what’s in store here!

I have a question inspired by the show for October 21, and remarks from my Tuk Tuk driver. I think that there is a sort of protection racket going on for people who own restaurants, at least in the city of Antigua. Basically, I want to know if Johnny has heard of anything like this: according to my Tuk Tuk driver, A restaurant is “left alone”” for the first year. After that, the owners are hit with an onslaught of fees to comply with government regulations, taxes, and the like. He says that he used to own a restaurant, but all of these fees made it impossible to continue. Perhaps this is something that a good Lawyer could help you get around?

      Hey Frank,

Just heard from Johnny. He’ll answer your questions on an upcoming show!
