John Galt’s Pre-Seminar Trip
July 4 – 7, 2018
John Galt, the original New Expat, introduced his Lake Atitlan trips as a way for attendees to Johnny’s Expat “Insider” Seminars to get a more in-depth view of Guatemala and it’s people. He may not be with us anymore but we’ll continue to carry on the tradition as long as we can. There are 2 choices, pre-seminar and post-seminar but each is unique and offers a different experience. If you have the time, do both. You won’t be disappointed!

Day 2 – Trip to Chichicastenango
Day 3 – Riserva Natural/ Ceramics & Weaving

Day 1 – Iximche
Enjoy the private transfer to Iximche Mayan Ruins. You’ll go back in time 1000 years to the original capital of Guatemala. Or was it? The story changes every time I go. We’ll have lunch at a local favorite restaurant, Katok. Located in the mountains of Guatemala, Katok is known throughout the country for its meat, sausages, and cheeses. All from their own farms.
After lunch, we’ll head to Lake Atitlan and its main town, Panajachel. We’ll visit the Lake museum to learn more about the lake and how it’s formed throughout the years. Dinner will be in Panajachel.
Bus: 5 hours. Walking: Moderate
Day 2 – Chichicastenango
In the morning we’ll head up the hill into Chichicastenango. Chichi, as it’s called, is home to one of the largest Mayan outdoor markets in Central America. Expect to negotiate if you want to buy something. It’s expected. Lunch will be in Chichi and we’ll head back to Pana in the afternoon. Dinner in Pana.
Bus: 2 hours. Activity: Strenuous
Day 3 – Riserva Natural
We’ll take a Tuk Tuk ride to Riserva Natural. You’ll find suspension bridges and waterfalls along the trail and enjoy the natural beauty of Guatemala. We’ll have lunch at the reserve and then visit the butterfly pavilion. In the afternoon our Tuk Tuks will take us along the lake to visit local weaving and ceramics. You’ll get more great views of the lake along the way. Dinner in Pana
Bus: None. Walking: Strenuous
Day 4 – Return to Barcelo
You’ll have some free time in the morning to get any last minute shopping or lounging in. For lunch, we’ll go see Smokin’ Joe’s BBQ. This guy has it figured out. Started out as a one-man band but you should see his operation now. Once you’re stuffed, we’ll board our private shuttle back to the Barcelo in Guatemala City. You’ll have a little time to get settled before the start of Johnny’s Seminar.
